Sub-Auspiciis is a special form of doctorate awarded by the head of state to the Emperor and today to the Federal President.
The first documented mention of the promotio sub ausiciis Imperatoris is found under Emperor Ferdinand II in 1625 at the University of Graz. From 1661, the honorary award is also found at the University of Vienna, which was subordinated to the Jesuit Order, which was instrumental in the continuation of the award. Until the end of the 18th century, this award was reserved almost exclusively for members of the high nobility.
